Presidents Report

I recently watched an excellent documentary by Ken Burns titled “The National Parks; America’s Greatest Idea.” While the cinematography was incredible, one of the things that stood out to me was the parallels between the creation and care our national park system and the creation and care of our labor unions.

In both cases, corporate and human greed sought to exploit resources for their own selfish gains. Corporations wanted to strip the land of its timber, minerals, and oil much like corporations want to strip workers of their wages, working conditions, and dignity.

This documentary highlighted how a … Read More...

Presidents Report

This month I had the privilege of attending the 2017 IAMAW Transportation Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first time I have attended an IAMAW conference and several things stuck with me as I left to come home.

First the good news. I was able to hear from a lot of very dedicated IAMAW members working and fighting on your behalf. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka, IAMAW I.P. Bob Martinez, TWU President Harry Lombardo, GVP of Transportation Sito Pantoja, and Attorney Joe Guerrieri were among the many speakers at this conference. They along with their staff and … Read More...

Presidents Report

In Victory Lodge 1725’s continuing efforts to support and serve our members, it my pleasure to announce the formation of a new committee designed to do just that for a special group of our brothers and sisters, our veterans. The Victory Lodge 1725’s Veterans Committee was established this month with the following vision:

“Victory Lodge 1725 recognizes the unique situation and needs of our members that have served in our country’s military. We believe it is our duty to help and be of service to those members in any way we can. There is an abundance of public … Read More...

“Right to work.”  There is not a more anti-labor phrase in the English language. To the uninformed “Right to Work” may sound like a good thing, but the reality is far, far different.

Corporations, Chambers of Commerce, and anti-labor legislators for a long time have falsely promoted this innocent sounding phrase by saying that it is all about allowing the worker to have free choice and that it’s not fair to make someone pay for union dues as a condition of employment. That’s what they want you to believe, but don’t be fooled. Calling “Right to Work” good … Read More...

President’s Report – January 2017

On Monday, January 16 th this nation will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We know of Dr. King as the preeminent warrior in the fight against the injustice of racism. Racism however was not his only fight.

Dr. King was also a passionate and powerful ally of labor unions in their fight for workplace justice. Dr. King understood that social and economic injustice in the workplace was born from the same enemy that gave us Jim Crow outside of the workplace. He found that the injustice on the farm was also to be found on the factory floor. In … Read More...

As I look back on this past year here at our lodge, I am amazed at all that we have accomplished towards our goal of making Victory Lodge 1725 the best local in the IAMAW.

This year saw many improvements to our facility. Upgrades were made to our office systems with the purchase of new hardware and software and with this we have standardized all the operating systems at the lodge and install the latest malware to protect those systems. Improvements were also made to the lodge I.T. and multimedia systems. A new and improved Wi-Fi system was installed throughout … Read More...

President’s Report – November 2016

November 22, 2016 Mike Jones 0

This Fall at the 39th annual IAMAW Grand Lodge Convention International President Bob Martinez stated that the most important challenge that our union faces is organizing. This organizing effort involves educating unrepresented workers on what makes a union work and explaining to them the many benefits of belonging to a union. Mr. Martinez further stated that organizing must be a part of our culture and that we must live it 24/7 to survive and thrive as a union.

As members of Local Lodge 1725 we are fortunate in that we already belong to a union. However, we still need to … Read More...

Solidarity. It is the single most powerful word in unionism. Without it there simply can be no union. Recently I have had the opportunity to see this word in action first hand and because of that, I know more than ever how powerful it is.

The first example that comes to mind is the effort made by a coalition of diverse labor unions during 2016 election cycle. Instead of each individual labor union fighting on its own to ensure that labor friendly candidates get elected, they have joined forces to form a united front. Unions such as the UAW, … Read More...

President’s Report – September 2016

One of the primary goals that I have for Victory Lodge 1725 is for this local lodge to be seen by it’s members as a valuable community resource. This lodge should be more than just a place where we hold monthly business meetings and conduct the routine but necessary business at hand. It should be a place where we offer our members opportunities and events that will benefit them at work as well as their time away from work. It should also be a place where we build solidarity and fellowship through the common interest and shared goals that define what … Read More...
