“The Union.” I hear that phrase used a lot by our members.  ”The Union did this.” “Why hasn’t the Union hasn’t done that.” “The Union said this…” etcetera, etcetera. It makes it sound as if The Union is comprised by anonymous people in some faraway place.

Here’s the thing. The Union is not comprised by anonymous people in some faraway place. The Union, your union, is made up of people that you know and work with every day. You share the same break rooms with them and work on the same ramp, shop, or hangar as them. It … Read More...

I recently watched an excellent documentary by Ken Burns titled “The National Parks; America’s Greatest Idea.” While the cinematography was incredible, one of the things that stood out to me was the parallels between the creation and care our national park system and the creation and care of our labor unions.

In both cases, corporate and human greed sought to exploit resources for their own selfish gains. Corporations wanted to strip the land of its timber, minerals, and oil much like corporations want to strip workers of their wages, working conditions, and dignity.

This month I had the privilege of attending the 2017 IAMAW Transportation Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first time I have attended an IAMAW conference and several things stuck with me as I left to come home.
