Veterans Day President’s Report

Saturday November 11th 2017 is Veterans Day. It is a day that we deservingly acknowledge and honor the men and women that have served in our country’s military. Many of the issues facing veterans are the same ones facing working families, lack of good jobs, the lack of accessible health care and the increasingly uphill struggle of trying to make a better life for themselves and their families.

While wearing lapel pins, and putting magnetic red, white, and blue ribbons on your car are well intended gestures, I am asking Read More...

President’s Report – October, 2017

This President’s report does not bring good news with it. Judgement day is on the horizon for public sector unions in this country as the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that could deal a serious blow to American organized labor.

The Supreme Court announced last Thursday that it will hear Janus v. AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union). This case seeks to defund public sector unions by making illegal, the requirement that members under a collective bargaining agreement pay agency fees which are design exclusively to support and … Read More...

Labor Day: What It Really Means

September 1, 2017 Mike Jones 0

On Monday, September 4th, we will celebrate Labor Day in the United States. When most Americans think of Labor Day, they think of nothing more than a holiday that provides them with extra time off from work and big sales at local retailers and across the internet. While these things are nice, they sadly neglect the true meaning and purpose of this important holiday.

The real purpose of Labor Day is to honor the American labor movement. It is a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions and sacrifices of the working men and women of this … Read More...

President’s Report

Currently Victory Lodge 1725 members at both PSA and American Airlines (AA) have negotiating committees that are deep into the difficult process of securing new collective bargaining agreements on behalf of our members. After many frustrating and fruitless efforts to get PSA to bring a legitimate and acceptable offer to the table, the IAM petitioned the National Mediation Board (NMB) to step in and assist with bringing these negotiations to a successful conclusion. As a result, on August 3rd the NMB assigned a case number and mediator to these negotiations. At the American Airlines-TWU/IAM Association negotiations, on July … Read More...

President’s Report

“The Union.” I hear that phrase used a lot by our members.  ”The Union did this.” “Why hasn’t the Union hasn’t done that.” “The Union said this…” etcetera, etcetera. It makes it sound as if The Union is comprised by anonymous people in some faraway place.

Here’s the thing. The Union is not comprised by anonymous people in some faraway place. The Union, your union, is made up of people that you know and work with every day. You share the same break rooms with them and work on the same ramp, shop, or hangar as them. It … Read More...

President’s Report – May 2017

Presidents Report

I recently watched an excellent documentary by Ken Burns titled “The National Parks; America’s Greatest Idea.” While the cinematography was incredible, one of the things that stood out to me was the parallels between the creation and care our national park system and the creation and care of our labor unions.

In both cases, corporate and human greed sought to exploit resources for their own selfish gains. Corporations wanted to strip the land of its timber, minerals, and oil much like corporations want to strip workers of their wages, working conditions, and dignity.

This documentary highlighted how a … Read More...

Presidents Report

This month I had the privilege of attending the 2017 IAMAW Transportation Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the first time I have attended an IAMAW conference and several things stuck with me as I left to come home.

First the good news. I was able to hear from a lot of very dedicated IAMAW members working and fighting on your behalf. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka, IAMAW I.P. Bob Martinez, TWU President Harry Lombardo, GVP of Transportation Sito Pantoja, and Attorney Joe Guerrieri were among the many speakers at this conference. They along with their staff and … Read More...

Presidents Report

In Victory Lodge 1725’s continuing efforts to support and serve our members, it my pleasure to announce the formation of a new committee designed to do just that for a special group of our brothers and sisters, our veterans. The Victory Lodge 1725’s Veterans Committee was established this month with the following vision:

“Victory Lodge 1725 recognizes the unique situation and needs of our members that have served in our country’s military. We believe it is our duty to help and be of service to those members in any way we can. There is an abundance of public … Read More...

“Right to work.”  There is not a more anti-labor phrase in the English language. To the uninformed “Right to Work” may sound like a good thing, but the reality is far, far different.

Corporations, Chambers of Commerce, and anti-labor legislators for a long time have falsely promoted this innocent sounding phrase by saying that it is all about allowing the worker to have free choice and that it’s not fair to make someone pay for union dues as a condition of employment. That’s what they want you to believe, but don’t be fooled. Calling “Right to Work” good … Read More...
