Southwest Airlines Rejects Union’s Proposal.

Yesterday, Southwest Airlines held firm to their demands for work (scope) concessions from our members. The company is offering the illusion of “no furlough” protection through the end of 2021.  Included in this proposal is an escape provision for the Company to furlough people if things don’t change or if there is a turn for the worse in the industry. We are not fooled into thinking that Southwest will employ people they simply don’t need and will pay them to stand idle.  No airline would agree to that crippling commitment.

September 24, 2020

Sisters and Brothers:

Over the past month, the leaders of most of the major airlines, along with union leadership and members have been on Capitol Hill to push Congress to act immediately to pass a clean extension of the Payroll Support Program (PSP). There are only six days remaining before the PSP expires, and without a clean extension, hundreds of thousands of airline workers face the possibility of being furloughed.

We need all our members, their families, and friends to contact their senators to get Congress to act NOW before the current PSP expires. It only takes … Read More...

August 27, 2020 Admin 0

August 27, 2020

As you all know American has announced that, barring intervention from Congress, it intends to begin furloughs October 1st. Your Association leadership was only provided with the reduction information late last night.  We have met with the company on this issue, and we continue to work to limit the impact on our members as much as possible.

The IAM has responded by calling on members to make a last stand on Capitol Hill and redouble efforts to convince lawmakers to renew funding for the PSP, which has stalled in the Senate. Airline executives agree that legislative action, if taken soon, would prevent the job cuts.

The Paycheck Support Program contained in the CARES Act is set to expire on October 1, 2020. Carriers are making plans on how to deal with its loss, and the outlook doesn’t look good for airline workers.

American Airlines is expected to announce thousands of workers will be laid-off on October 1, Southwest Airlines is eliminating 35,000 flights from its October schedule, and Air Wisconsin, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, ExpressJet, Hawaiian Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines and United Ground Express have issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications (WARN). There is no time to waste.

The only hope of staving … Read More...

Southwest Misleads its Employees and the Public

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

While Southwest has been going through the same hard times as all other airlines, they have continued to mislead employees and the public on a very important fact. In spite of their repeated claims otherwise, furloughs have indeed occurred at Southwest Airlines. The Machinists Union has reached the end of its tolerance of allowing Southwest to continue this myth. Just last Friday, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly did it again – enough is enough.

As most great ideas begin, so did Southwest Airlines Co. The idea of Southwest sprang from Herb Kelleher and Rollin … Read More...
