Brothers and Sisters:

Negotiations continued this week with meetings being conducted virtually on the Zoom platform. The full negotiating committees for the Company and the Union were present. The use of a virtual process to conduct negotiations has not diminished any of the abilities to conduct thorough meetings and has sped up the process while saving both parties the time and expense associated with travel and accommodations.

We have been advised by the National Mediation Board (NMB) that our first negotiations session with Mediator Victoria Gray will be held March 10 through 12 in Kansas City, Missouri. We look forward to Ms. Gray’s assistance in obtaining the contract you – the membership — deserve. 

We understand many members will have questions regarding the mediation process. The Negotiating Committee is planning station visits and attending local lodge meetings between negotiation sessions in order to explain how mediation works and answer general questions about our negotiations to date. Your Negotiation Committee met at the Marriott Suites Medical/Market Center in Dallas, Texas. February 25 – 27, 2020 to prepare for mediation. We briefly met with the company but were unable to resolve our remaining concerns.

IAM and Southwest Airlines Negotiations Headed to Mediation

After more than two years of negotiations with Southwest Airlines, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) today announced it invoked its right to mediation with the National Mediation Board (NMB) to help resolve the dispute over a new contract for 7,852 Southwest Airlines Passenger Service and Reservation employees.

While many contract issues remain unresolved, the one issue that has completely derailed negotiations is Southwest’s treatment of its employees.
