The joint Alaska Airlines Negotiating Committee continued negotiations with Alaska Airlines management this past week in Seattle, Washington. This session was dedicated to RSSA contract issues.

Represented by the Company were: Greg Mays, Vice President/Labor; Wayne Newton, Vice President/AOCS; Jason Berry, Managing Director Cargo; Bob Hartnett, Labor Director; Denise Kliskey, COPS Labor Manager; and, Rebecca Meissner, Company Attorney.

Joining the Negotiating Committee were: James Carlson, Assistant Airline Coordinator; Kris Hannah, Grand Lodge Representative; and Brianna Gregory, Grand Lodge Representative.

Discussions regarding our RSSA and COPS negotiations with Alaska Airlines resulted in agreement to delay any filing for mediation services under the Railway Labor Act with the National Mediation Board (NMB). The provisions of Article 25 in the IAM-Alaska Airlines RSSA agreement requires both parties to jointly file for mediation, through the NMB, if an agreement had not been reached by April 19, 2018.  It is both the Company’s and Union’s position that the RSSA and COPS talks are progressing adequately under the current process and that involving the NMB at this time would only slow

IAM/Alaska Airlines HMO ARBITRATION UPDATE

Alaska has at this point paid out most of the 1.3 million dollars it owes to eligible employees as a result of the IAM’s successful arbitration regarding HMO coverage.   Not surprisingly, because the arbitration covered hundreds of employees and a time frame going back ten years, several questions and issues came to the IAM’s attention regarding payments and eligibility during the payment process.   These questions were taken up with the company, through counsel when needed, and have resulted in two updates which are generally applicable.

ALASKA NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

On July 6, 2017, District 142 served notice to Alaska Airlines that we intended to begin negotiations for the RSSA and the COPS Agreements. On July 17, the company objected to negotiating the COPS agreement insisting to break our negotiations apart.

A week later, the company filed a grievance against the union and our membership for attempting to change the amendable date of the COPS agreement by beginning talks for both agreements at the same time.
